In memory of
DONALD VAN SCOTTER

Korean War 1953.jpg

In memory of our brother Donald Eugene Van Scotter

who passed away on a Sunday morning, July 31 2022.

Don would have been 92 on December 3th.

Coincidentally, July 31 (1901) was the birthday of our father Henry Irving.

I have joyful memories of Don while growing up. He was nearly nine years my senior and was more than a big brother to my younger siblings, Roger Henry and Alan John.

Don also has a brother, Robert James, nearly two and half years older than him. We five boys straddled The Great Depression with Don born in late 1930 and his younger brothers ushering in World War II from 1939 to 1944.

Yet, Don was much more than an older brother. Bob and he served as surrogate fathers who taught us many lessons in life, while serving as role models.

I grew up admiring his productive energy, innate intelligence and insatiable work ethic. He always seemed to be there when our parents were too preoccupied and exhausted raising a handful of energetic boys.

When Don wasn’t nurturing our desire for sports, he was available to offer welcome and timely advice on the art of living.

I treasure the enthusiastic interest he took in observing and helping his younger brothers grow into young men.

Don was an accomplished proud man, whose pride never morphed into hubris.

He was a big-city guy, who cherished his “Small Town Boy" roots.
